2018 has been quite a milestone year for Huawei within the smartphone arena. Last Spring saw the Shenzhen company release its most critically acclaimed smartphone series yet in the shape of the P20 line up; with the P20 Pro gaining rave reviews for its now iconic triple Leica lens camera setup.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Due to its increasing popularity and brand recognition it’s no wonder that Huawei has become the world's second largest smartphone maker by market share, surpassing Apple in late Summer. Huawei’s year of success is not complete as last week saw the company launch its latest (and possibly greatest) handset yet in the form of the Mate 20 Pro at a special event in London.

For those of you unfamiliar with Huawei’s range of handsets I would explain the Mate series as being equivalent with Samsung’s ‘Note’ series (minus the stylus of course) or Apple’s Plus series – It is the brand's true powerhouse handset. But why all the attention? Below are my top reasons for why the Huawei Mate 20 Pro may be your next handset.

Reverse Wireless Charging

The beautiful glass backing of the Mate 20 Pro finally enables Huawei users to wirelessly charge their device – something long time fans of the company have been calling out for. However, Huawei had another trick up its sleeve to reward Huawei Fans. Huawei has created the worlds first ‘Wireless Reverse Charge’ handset; Users can turn their Mate 20 Pro into a wireless charging station allowing others to simply place their handset onto the back of the device to refill their battery.

The Iconic triple Camera Setup

The triple Leica camera set-up of the P20 Pro returns but this time in the form of a square on the back of the Mate handset, in a move that Huawei claims emulates the headlights of a sports car. The incredible 40MP camera of the P20 Pro returns alongside a 8MP telephoto lens which allows up to 5x optical zoom and a new addition of a 16mm Leica ultra-wide angle lens. It’s this new addition of the 20MP ultra-wide angle lens that has fans most excited as it will allow users to cram in even more details into stunning landscape and city shots.

Media Power house with long lasting battery

The Mate 20 Pro is powered by Huawei’s in-house chipset the Kirin 980 which the company believes to be just as powerful as its Qualcomm and Apple equivalents. 6GB of RAM enables fluid multitasking with 128GB of storage being more than enough for users to carry a large app and media library on the go. Powering all of this is a huge 4,200mAh battery which promises even the heaviest users a charge free day. And when you do need to charge your device Huawei’s excellent quick charge feature can replenish 70% of your battery in just 30 minutes. Thankfully this fast charger is included in the box so there is no additional cost for this luxury.

New ways to unlock your device

Another first for Huawei (at least for the European market) is the introduction of the under-display finger scanner. This futuristic addition allows the Mate 20 Pro’s screen to push all the way to the sides and bottom of the device while users can press a specific section in the screens centre to unlock their phone with just their fingerprint. If that isn’t enough however users can also avail of Huawei’s advanced facial recognition unlock which is housed in the devices notch at the top of the handset.
