After much hype and excitement, we have now seen the release of the Samsung S8 and S8+. With all big handset launches there is a massive sense of excitement and some fear. You have a shiny new toy to play with but you are always afraid that it is going to be the same as its predecessors. With this hands-on review of the S8 and S8+ we can say they have impressed and there are many reasons why.

Samsung have made their iconic edge to edge design a staple on both the S8 and S8+. Introducing the “Infinity display”, which does not disappoint. From looking at pictures to watching videos, the clarity on this screen is impeccable. This is helped by the additional amount on screen space Samsung have provided, 18% more vs. the S7. The Samsung logo and the home button are both removed to deliver this immersing display. The new sleek body is ergonomically designed to fit your hand comfortably. The phone feels slimmer and longer than the S7. This ideal as it provides a strong sense of security while holding it, with no fear of the device slipping.

Samsung have pioneered some amazing security features on the S8 and S8+. The main security feature on all flagship devices these days is the finger print scanner. This comes with the S8 and S8+, and the responsiveness is lightning fast. Some of the key new features for security are the facial recognition and the iris scanner. The facial recognition scanner is unique. You simply hold the phone in front of your face and the phone unlocks. It is quite the party trick. One of the most impressive features of both the S8 and S8+ is the iris scanner technology that is available. The iris scanner is 200 times more secure than the finger print. We are all born with our own unique and individual iris, so it would be very difficult to unlock otherwise. Your iris is not prone to external damage like cuts that can tamper with the unlocking of the device. The iris scanner has a key function for the S8 and S8+. It compliments one of their main features which is the Secure Folder. Secure Folder can be set up for people to have their entire important information store. It gives them piece of mind if they lose their phone. All information is not accessible without using the iris scanner to unlock it. Brilliant invention for professionals to ensure their work is secure on their mobile.

One of the main features that everyone fixates on is the use of the camera on their phone. It is a must these days to capture the most important memories and the hilarious selfies. Especially of your best friend looking like a bunny. For all the fun and memories the S8 will capture them in the highest quality possible. The S8 and S8+ come with the same, award winning 12MP rear camera of the S7. Providing auto focus in milliseconds and producing clear images in low light, you wont miss a moment. Each time the S8 & S8+ takes 1 phone, 3 – 5 images taken at once to combine to create the best one. For all the selfie fun, the S8 & S8+ has an 8MP front facing camera with auto-focus to get the clearest selfie. There are also many smart filter functions to play with, including airbrushing. Samsung like to help clear wrinkles for those vanity pictures taken.

After having the time to use the S8 & S8+ I found both phones to be amazing. New features kept on creeping up every time I thought I mastered the phone. Features like Bixby have not been fully rolled out into the market yet. But there are still some cool features that Bixby offers. Camera suggestion of products for example. Take a photo and it asks if I want to use Bixby Vision to find the products in the image - ideal for any shopaholic. The S8 and S8+ have caused a stir in the market. It is easy to see why by their iconic style and borderless display. The S8 vs. the S8+ on size is the key consumer dilemma. Both phones have very much the same features but the S8+ does have the bigger screen which is a cinematic experience for a phone viewing. For the best experience we would say to get your hands on these phones to decide which you need. Both the Samsung S8 and S8+ are on live display in our Samsung Experience Stores and Currys PC World stores.
