Samsung last night announced the newest stars in the Galaxy line-up, the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

The new handsets were unveiled at a special event held in advance of this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Similar in style to Samsung’s stunning S8, the new Galaxy S9 and S9+ sport an entirely new camera system, whose headline feature is a dual aperture lens. More typically seen on high-end standalone cameras, this allows the S9 to control how much light reaches its camera sensor.

Photos taken in low-light should see noticeable improvements using the new f/1.5 aperture. Under better lighting conditions, the camera quickly and automatically uses its more typical f/2.4 setting. Optical Image Stabilisation reduces blur and keeps your snaps in focus. The larger S9+ includes a second lens on the main camera. This provides depth of field in photos, especially useful for taking professional-looking portrait shots.

The enhanced and reimagined S9 camera will be ideal for powering live emojis and ‘Pokemon Go’ style augmented reality apps. In fact, Samsung have combined these features into their new AR Emojis, which let you create a cartoon version of yourself that mimics your expressions.

On the video side, the camera now features a super slo-mo rate of 960 frames per second. Up to 4 times slower than the slo-mo on other smartphones, this will make for some truly epic videos. Suitably dramatic background music can be easily added too.

Another advance from the S8 are the stereo speakers from AKG that will give a fuller sound if you’re listening to music on the go.

Galaxy S9 PurpleInternally, the S9 and S9+ ramp up the horsepower, featuring the latest octa-core processors and 4GB/6GB of RAM respectively. Storage options start at 64GB, plenty for apps, photos and videos. Up to 256GB of additional memory can be added via the memory card slot.

The S9 and S9+ retain the features we loved about the S8. Samsung’s gorgeous curved Infinity Displays are still in place, big, bright and packing OLED technology for amazing clarity.

The already beautiful S8 design is further refined for comfort and usability, thanks to a slight repositioning of the fingerprint sensor on the back of the S9. Samsung have also shaken up the colour scheme a little, adding an eye-catching purple to the mix along with the more typical blues and blacks.

Other expected features such as the 8MP selfie camera, face and eye unlocking, Bixby smart assistant, headphone jack, wireless charging compatibility and certified dust/water resistance are also present and correct.

The new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are available for pre-order now. Order by 7th March to get yours up to a week before the official launch day.
