In a suprise to no one that was keeping up with our rumour roundup, Apple unveiled two new iPhones – the 7 and 7 Plus – at an event in San Francisco last night.

iPhone 7 rangeAmong some of the key new features on iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, is that all-important IP67 rating – which has long been lacking compared to Apple’s rivals – making it the first splash, water and dust resistant iPhone.

Apple is also promising that iPhone 7 has the ‘best battery life ever in an iPhone’. With the new A10 Fusion chip, according to Apple, the new iPhone will run faster and longer than its predecessors due to the chip’s ‘high-efficiency cores that are capable of running at just one-fifth the power of the high-performance cores’.

While we haven’t yet gotten our hands on the new iPhone to test this claim, the improvements in performance and power should vastly improve the gaming experience on iPhone and make it more appealing for ‘professional’ gamers.

Apple has also upped the ante in terms of camera specs. The new 12MP rear camera is significantly faster and includes optical image stabilization, vastly improved zoom and a larger ƒ/1.8 aperture, which means brighter more detailed images.

The front-facing camera has also gotten an upgrade. Now coming in at 7MP, it also offers image stabilization, advanced pixel technology and wide color capture. For anyone thinking of spending that little bit extra and buying the iPhone 7 Plus, you’ll get another camera thrown in for your investment. By all accounts, the dual rear camera on the 7 Plus is pretty impressive and not only offers a new depth-of-field effect, you’ll also find technology called Machine Learning which can separate the foreground and background of pictures – very appealing for professional photographers.

Anyone who followed our live blog or watched the presentation will also know that the new generation of iPhone has done away with the headphone jack and instead has decided to focus on improving the sound quality on the iPhone and launch wireless EarPods – which will likely be the standard for iPhones to come. We’re not totally sold on the design of the EarPods but we’re hoping the next release will be more appealing.
