If you’re a sports fan, you may have noticed that Setanta Sports has now become eir Sport. But what exactly does that mean for you as a viewer and/or an eir customer? We’ve got the lowdown.

The background

In December 2015 eir announced that it had agreed a deal to acquire Setanta Sports Ireland as part of its plans to expand its TV offering for customers. The deal was finalised in April 2016 and on July 5th, eir Sport was officially launched.

How many channels does eir Sport include?

Much like the original Setanta Sports offering, eir Sport is available in a six-channel pack and includes two eir Sport channels and four BT Sport channels, including two in HD.

I’m an eir TV/Vision customer, what does this change mean for me?

Not much, in that you won’t notice any changes in your package or bill except the name change on the channels. Handy!

I’m currently an eir broadband customer, what does this mean for me?

It’s good news! While eir Sport is available to almost everyone – more on that later – current and new eir broadband customers can get eir Sport for free as part of their plan. So there’s no added extras or upgrade requirements.

But I don’t own a TV; can I still avail of eir Sport?

Yes, if you own a laptop, tablet or smartphone. You can access eir Sport through the website, simple log in and away you go or download the new free eir Sport app for iOS or Android.

I’m an eir broadband customer but use Sky TV; can I still avail of free eir Sport?

You certainly can, all you have to do is add eir Sport to your Sky box. Simply log into your eir account and follow the onscreen instructions.

I’m a Virgin Media customer; can I still access eir Sport?

Unfortunately, it seems highly unlikely Virgin Media customers will be able to access eir Sport after July 31st as Virgin and eir failed to strike a deal to secure the partnership. At present Virgin Media customers can avail of all six eir Sport channels as an add-on to their TV package, however, it seems this will no longer be the case by August 1st.

You mentioned a new app; anything I need to know about that?

Yes, not only is the app free for iOS or Android, you can also register up to two devices – so your phone and tablet – for watching on the go anywhere within the Republic of Ireland.

Sounds good, where do I sign up?
